During his visit to the Joint Security Area today, the Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü, commented on the security situation on the Korean peninsula:

“Looking across the Joint Security Area, the potential for miscalculation is all too apparent. None of us can afford for this to happen – the stakes are simply too high. North Korea’s recent actions are a flagrant provocation and only serve to heighten tensions. North Korea must bind itself to global norms, including the Chemical Weapons Convention, as an important step towards enhancing peace and security on the Korean peninsula”.
