Foreign Minister of Turkey Visits the OPCW

OPCW Director-General commended Turkey for its implementation of the Convention and firm and consistent support for the work of the OPCW.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, H.E. Prof. Dr Ahmet Davutoğlu, visited the OPCW headquarters on 8 October 2009 for a meeting with the Director-General, Ambassador Rogelio Pfirter.

Foreign Minister Davutoğlu reaffirmed Turkey’s firm commitment to the objectives of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), and assured the Director-General of his Government’s continued strong support for the work of the OPCW and implementation of the global chemical weapons ban.

Director-General Pfirter provided Foreign Minister Davutoğlu an overview of the status of the implementation of the CWC, including the destruction of global chemical weapons stockpiles and non-proliferation activities. He commended Turkey for its implementation of the Convention and firm and consistent support for the work of the OPCW.

In their discussion, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu and Director-General Pfirter stressed the importance of achieving universality of the Convention.
