OPCW Director-General Briefs Argentine Foreign Ministry and Meets Argentine Chemical Weapons Convention National Authority

On 16 December 2005, Ambassador Rogelio Pfirter, Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), paid an official visit to the Argentine Republic. He briefed the ministries involved in the national implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention on the status of the treaty’s global application. Officials from the Argentine CWC National Authority, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Customs participated in these meetings.

Director-General Pfirter was hosted by Ambassador Roberto García Moritán, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. In their meeting, Director-General Pfirter firmly reiterated the commitment of the OPCW to ensure that all Member States receive the support they require to achieve the full and effective national implementation of the chemical weapons ban, including all Member States within the Latin American and Caribbean region.

Vice Minister García Moritán underscored the Argentine Republic’s continuing resolve to implement all disarmament and non-proliferation agreements in full and effectively. He assured Director-General Pfirter of his Government’s unwavering support of the CWC and the OPCW. Vice Minister García Moritán noted that support for the CWC serves to enhance security within the region, as well as providing for the peaceful and transparent development of Argentina’s burgeoning chemical industry.
