OPCW Director-General Opens Chemical Safety and Security Workshop in Cyprus

During a visit to Cyprus, 22-24 May, the OPCW Director-General opened an Arabic-language Chemical Safety and Security Workshop for North Africa and Middle Eastern countries.

The workshop, offered in Arabic for the first time, was held in Nicosia in cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus and the European Union. It provided a forum for exchanging best practices on regulatory standards in response to current and emerging challenges in the region.

The Director-General also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ioannis Kasoulides; Minister of Defence, Mr Christoforos Fokaides; National Security Adviser to the President, Ambassador Kyriacos Kouros and other senior officials. In his meeting with Cypriot officials, the Director-General acknowledged the important contribution Cyprus has made to the OPCW-UN Joint Mission in Syria and other activities in regard to the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

He also delivered a lecture at the University of Nicosia to an audience of academics, students and diplomats based in Cyprus.
