Director-General of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa visits the OPCW

The Director-General of the Department of International Relations and Co-operation of the Republic of South Africa, Ambassador Jerry Matjila, visited the OPCW on 18 June 2015 and met with the OPCW Director-General, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü.

 

Ambassador Matjila and the Director-General discussed a number of issues related to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), including cooperation between South Africa and the OPCW in advancing universality of the CWC and enhancing its implementation in Africa.

The Director-General updated Ambassador Matjila on the OPCW’s mission to eliminate the Syrian chemical weapons programme and discussed other initiatives undertaken by the OPCW in the areas of national implementation, international cooperation, and assistance and protection.

The Director-General expressed strong appreciation to Ambassador Matjila for his country’s support of OPCW activities, including South Africa’s hosting of regional workshops and seminars.
