On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Entry into Force of the Chemical Weapons Convention and the founding of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the President of the Republic of Ecuador, H.E. Mr Rafael Correa Delgado, sent a message of congratulations on behalf of the people of Ecuador to the OPCW and its Director-General, Ambassador Rogelio Pfirter.
In recognizing the importance of the work carried out by the OPCW, which is efficiently managed by Director-General Pfirter, President Correa Delgado recalled that the Republic of Ecuador considers the Chemical Weapons Convention to be the most appropriate mechanism for attaining chemical disarmament and preventing the proliferation of these weapons. In that regard, President Correa Delgado lauded the OPCW’s decision to erect a permanent Memorial to All Victims of Chemical Warfare as entirely fitting since it will serve to focus the world’s attention on the terrible consequences of the use of chemical weapons, which are utterly prohibited by the Chemical Weapons Convention.
