Turkish Foreign Minister Visits the OPCW

The Foreign Minister of Turkey, H.E. Ahmet Davutoğlu, visited the OPCW today and met with the OPCW Director-General, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü, and senior staff. Mr Davutoğlu is in the Netherlands on an official visit with the Turkish Prime Minister, H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The Director-General and Foreign Minister discussed current issues of mutual interest to the OPCW and Turkey. The Director-General provided a briefing for the Foreign Minister on the status of implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), including the destruction of global chemical arsenals and the OPCW’s efforts to achieve CWC universality. They also discussed global and regional security developments, and the Director-General briefed the Foreign Minister on new challenges that will arise as the destruction of existing stockpiles nears completion.

The Foreign Minister affirmed his country’s commitment to the Convention and support for the work of the OPCW. The Director-General commended Turkey for its continuing commitment and support.
