During his official visit to the Argentine Republic, the Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ambassador Rogelio Pfirter, met representatives of the Argentine Chemical and Petrochemical Industry Association. In their meeting in Buenos Aires, the representatives of the Argentinean Chemical Industry assured the Director-General of the Association’s firm support for the effective implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and reiterated that the Association would continue to cooperate fully with the Convention’s non-proliferation regime as it applies to relevant chemical industrial activities.

Ambassador Pfirter also briefed the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress of Argentina, H.E. Mr Jorge Argüello, on a wide range of issues concerning the global chemical weapons ban’s effective implementation, in particular the Organisation’s Action Plan to achieve effective implementation on the part of all 167 OPCW Member States.

Chairman Argüello indicated, in keeping with the Argentine Republic’s unwavering commitment to the OPCW and the CWC, the draft legislation, which is needed to complement the existing Argentine implementing legislation and ensures the Convention’s full national implementation, would be completed in time of the Action Plan’s target date, 7 November 2005, which coincides with the commencement of the Tenth Session of the Conference of the States Parties to the CWC.
