Workshop on the Peaceful Development and Use of Chemistry for Member States of the OPCW in the Asian Region held in Seoul

Participants at the Workshop on the Peaceful Development and Use of Chemistry for Member States of the OPCW in the Asian Region, which was held in Seoul, in the Republic of Korea.

The OPCW, in cooperation with the National Authority of the Republic of Korea organised the fourth workshop on the peaceful development and use of chemistry for Member States of the OPCW in the Asian Region from 20 to 22 October 2015 in Seoul, Republic of Korea.  The workshop was attended by thirty-five participants from 21 States Parties* – a mixture of government officials responsible for chemical industry, chemical industry representatives, academics, and chemists.

The Workshop was organised with the support of a voluntary contribution from the Korean Government and opened by Mr Jong-kwon Youn, representative of Korean National Authority. The workshop aimed to enhance the capacities of the participating States Parties based on Korea’s experience with chemical technology and industrial development, including chemical safety and security.

The workshop covered the development of Korea’s chemical industry and its innovation strategy. The programme included, inter alia, presentations on Korea’s experience of processing safety management in chemical industries; chemical safety and security risk assessment for accident prevention and preparedness; substances requiring preparation for accidents; best practices in Responsible Care® activities; chemical risk prioritization for chemical industries; and chemical security threats and mitigation strategies. Ms Susan Caskey from Sandia National Laboratories, United States of America was invited as a speaker to deliver a presentation on chemical security aspects.

Participants also made a field trip to the Daesan Plant of LG Chem, Ltd. on the practical aspect of chemical safety management by the industry. The feedbacks from the participants were very positive and they expect to apply the knowledge and experience gained from this workshop to their future work.
