The OPCW and the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines co-hosted a legal workshop for Member States of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) on 21 and 22 April 2008, in Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Five of the OECS Member States participated in the workshop: Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. In addition, the Secretariat of the OECS participated and substantively supported the workshop.

The workshop was opened by the Attorney General of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Hon. Judith S. Jones Morgan.

During the workshop, OPCW legal experts met the drafters developing national legislation that is necessary to enforce the Chemical Weapons Convention. The workshop focussed on guidance for the development of regulations allowing for the effective enforcement of adopted implementing legislation. The States Parties’ progress in fulfilling their national implementation obligations was also discussed. The participating States Parties shared their national implementation experience and exchanged views on the possibilities of more effective implementation, in particular by integrating it into other national regimes for chemicals management.

The workshop was organised with the support of a voluntary contribution from the Kingdom of Spain.
