OPCW Director-General Visits Algeria

The OPCW Director-General, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü, visited Algeria from 1 – 2 June 2015. During his visit, the Director-General met with Mr Abdelhamid Senouci Bereksi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Ms Rabéa Kharfi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry and Mining; and Major General Djamel Gueroui, Chargé de Mission, Ministry of National Defence.

The Director-General opened the 13th Regional Meeting of National Authorities in Africa held in Algiers and delivered a lecture at a conference at the Houari Boumediene University of Science and Technology.

In his remarks to the university audience, the Director-General highlighted the importance of links between the scientific community and universities for promoting peaceful application of chemistry. He stated that the aim to complete chemical disarmament could only be reached with the continued commitment of States Parties and support from the next generation of leaders.

The Director-General also visited the Laboratory of the National Institute of Criminalistics and Criminology.
