About this version
The Handbook on Chemicals was developed to facilitate the efforts of National Authorities, Customs Authorities and industry to identify individual chemicals, covered by the schedules in the Annex on Chemicals of the CWC.
The Handbook on Chemicals has undergone a major revision since the previous version. The 2009 version incorporates information on all 1329 scheduled chemicals and riot control agents declared to the Technical Secretariat from 1997 until February 2009.
The Handbook on Chemicals 2009 includes chemical identifiers such as Chemical Abstract Registry (CAS) numbers, IUPAC and CAS chemical names, synonyms and World Customs Organisation Harmonized System Codes. All chemical names have been made consistent with the rules for naming compounds in the OPCW Central Analytical Database when available.
Although the Handbook on Chemicals contains information on all scheduled chemicals and riot control agents declared to the Technical Secretariat, it is not a comprehensive list of all declarable chemicals and as such should only be used as a tool to assist in the identification on chemicals.
Although every effort has been made to ensure that the information contained in the Handbook on Chemicals 2009 is accurate, I encourage States Parties to provide feedback, to enable the Secretariat to correct any errors or omissions in future versions of the Handbook on Chemicals.
