During an event at OPCW Headquarters on 12 May, Director-General Ahmet Üzümcü delivered a lecture to over 100 international students on the objectives, activities and challenges facing the OPCW. Following the lecture, Ambassador Üzümcü engaged in a lively dialogue with students on matters related to the OPCW agenda as well as on personal reflections regarding his service as Director-General.

“One of my greatest pleasures as Director-General is the chance to interact with some of the best and brightest students in universities around the world,” said Ambassador Üzümcü. “Initiatives such as the World Class The Hague help to empower students to serve as ambassadors for our mission to realise a world free of chemical weapons, and thereby contribute to international peace and security.”

An initiative of the Municipality of The Hague, the World Class programme connects international students studying in The Hague with prominent leaders in international relations, security, peace and justice. Students from the World Class are selected through a competitive process, and this year’s cadre is drawn from students from over 35 countries.

The event was opened and moderated by Mr Willem Post, International Advisor to the Mayor of The Hague and Director of the World Class programme.
