OPCW Opens its Doors to Mark UN Peace Day

Nearly 400 visitors – a third more than in 2008, the first year that Open Day was organised

For the second year running, the OPCW commemorated the UN Day of Peace on Sunday, 20 September 2009 by opening its doors to the general public as part of an “Open Day” programme coordinated by The Hague municipality.

The OPCW was one of seven international organisations based in the city that participated in the programme, together with the European Patent Office, International Criminal Court, International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and a trio of organisation located in the Peace Palace - the International Court of Justice, Permanent Court of Arbitration, and The Hague Convention for Private International Law.

For its part, the OPCW welcomed nearly 400 visitors on the day – a third more than in 2008, the first year that Open Day was organised. They were given a “walk-and-talk” tour of the Technical Secretariat covering the OPCW’s main activities, a special illustrated presentation on chemical weapons destruction, and a chance to interact with a team of OPCW inspectors who were on hand to demonstrate their equipment.
