OPCW Director-General Meets Director General of the Ministry of Defence of Japan

On 16 February 2007, the Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ambassador Rogelio Pfirter, and the Director General of the Ministry of Defence of Japan, H.E Mr Kenjiro Monji, met at the OPCW Headquarters. In their meeting, Director General Monji underscored Japan’s continuing support for the Organisation’s mission to complete eliminate chemical weapons through the global implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), a non-discriminatory, multilateral disarmament and non-proliferation treaty. He stressed the Government of Japan’s firm commitment to meet its obligations under the CWC.

On behalf of the OPCW, Director-General Pfirter expressed his gratitude to Director General Monji for Japan’s invaluable cooperation with the OPCW and for its generous voluntary contributions that have supported a number of the OPCW’s core activities, including the pursuit of the CWC’s universal and effective implementation.

Director-General Pfirter briefed Director General Monji on the status of the implementation of the CWC and the efforts undertaken by the OPCW’s 181 Member States to fulfil its mandate. He additionally stressed the importance of universal adherence to the Convention to ensure its ultimate achievement of a world free from chemical weapons.
