OPCW Director-General Addresses IUPAC Symposium

Recognises the important role of scientists, engineers and relevant civil society institutions

The OPCW Director-General, Ambassador Rogelio Pfirter, addressed the 42nd Congress of the International Union of Pure and Applied chemistry (IUPAC) in Glasgow, Scotland on 3 August 2009.

In his statement delivered at the symposium on “Ethics, Science and Development”, the Director-General recalled the OPCW’s collaboration with IUPAC, which seeks to raise awareness within the scientific communities about the norms and principles of the Chemical Weapons Convention. He underlined that such awareness could benefit significantly from the development of a code of conduct that fully incorporates the principles of the Convention and embodies ethical norms against the misuse of chemistry. The Director-General noted that considerable progress in that direction has already been accomplished and expressed the hope that this important work will soon come to fruition.

The Director-General recognised the important role of scientists, engineers and relevant civil society institutions and expressed his determination to continue to strengthen OPCW’s interaction and cooperation with their representative bodies in ensuring wider international support for the goals of the Convention.
