OPCW Director-General Addresses Egyptian Council of Foreign Affairs
At the invitation of the Egyptian Council of Foreign Affairs, the Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ambassador Rogelio Pfirter, addressed on Tuesday, 17 April 2007, a special session of the Council, devoted to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), focussing on the CWC’s implementation in the Middle East region.
Prior to this session held in Cairo, Egypt, Ambassador Pfirter was welcomed by H.E. Ambassador Waffa Bassim, Assistant Minister in charge of the Cabinet of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Assistant Minister Bassim expressed her Government’s views on the CWC.
In their meeting, Ambassador Pfirter provided Assistant Minister Bassim an overview of the CWC’s global implementation. He noted that 182 States had ratified the treaty, while a further thirteen States were urged to accede or ratify the CWC as soon as possible to be able to establish a universal ban on these weapons.
