H.E. Mr José Artur Denot Medeiros (Brazil)
H.E. Mr. José Artur Denot Medeiros, Permanent Representative of the Federative Republic of Brazil to the OPCW, presented his credentials to the Director-General on 23 May 2008. He is concurrently accredited as his country's Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Ambassador Medeiros is a career diplomat who joined the Brazilian Foreign Service in 1963. Prior to his current appointment, Ambassador Medeiros was the Chairman of the Nuclear Suppliers Group for a period of one year from 2006 to 2007 while he was serving as the Brazilian Special Representative for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2005-2008).
Ambassador Medeiros has served with the rank of Ambassador in the following countries: Germany, from 2002 to 2005; and Suriname, from 1989 to 1992. From 1995 to 2002, he was the Head of the Permanent Mission of Brazil to the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI) and Mercosur in Montevideo, Uruguay.
From 1983 to 1988 Ambassador Medeiros was posted to the Embassy of Brazil in Washington as Minister-Counsellor. Prior to this, he was assigned to the Brazilian Mission to the United Nations in New York in 1969 and subsequently in Geneva, Switzerland in 1973.
In the 1990’s, Ambassador Medeiros served as Director of the Departments of Foreign Trade and of International Affairs at the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Planning, as well as Under Secretary for Economic, Trade and Integration Affairs at the Foreign Ministry. In the 1970’s he held the position of Head of the Trade Policy Division at the Brazilian Foreign Ministry.
Ambassador Medeiros received a degree from the Law School of the University of Rio de Janeiro in 1965. Prior to graduating from Law School, in 1964 and 1965 he attended the Instituto Rio Branco, the Brazilian Diplomatic Academy.
