Brazil’s Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs Visits OPCW

The Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs of Brazil, H.E. Mr Carlos Antonio da Rocha Paranhos, visited the OPCW today and met with the Director-General, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü.

The Director-General provided an update to the Under Secretary-General on global implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, including the destruction of chemical weapons stockpiles and the status of the mission in Syria. The Director-General also discussed aspects of the international cooperation activities of the OPCW and the inspection regime for chemical industry. He commended Brazil for its commitment to the Convention and expressed his appreciation for its active support to the work of the OPCW.

The Under Secretary-General reiterated Brazil’s unwavering commitment to the complete ban on chemical weapons and expressed Brazil’s strong support for the OPCW and its work in implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention. In their discussions, Ambassador Paranhos recalled the visit of the Director-General to Brasília in May 2014 and highlighted the Government’s continued cooperation with the OPCW.
