During his visit to the headquarters of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) on 14 December, 2003, H.E. Mr Najeib El Khier Abdel Wahab, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of The Sudan, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the goals of the Chemical Weapons Convention, stating that the Organisation’s aims were of great importance to The Sudan now given the present international security situation.

The State Minister informed the Director General that in the future The Sudan planned to expand its chemical industry. The Sudan would seek the support of the Organisation to be able to accordingly expand its national capacity to implement the Convention.

OPCW Director General Pfirter commended the efforts of the government of The Sudan in supporting the advancement of the Chemical Weapons Convention in Africa.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) came into existence on 29 April 1997. Its deed of foundation—the Chemical Weapons Convention—aims to achieve four principal objectives: the elimination of chemical weapons and of the capacity to develop them, the verification of non-proliferation, international assistance and protection in the event of the use or threat of use of chemical weapons, and international cooperation and assistance in the peaceful use of chemistry.
