On 27 April 2005, H.E. Dr Kamal Kharazi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, paid an official visit to the headquarters of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
OPCW Director-General, Ambassador Rogelio Pfirter, welcomed Foreign Minister Kharazi and provided him an overview of the present status of the Chemical Weapons Convention’s (CWC) global implementation.
Foreign Minister Kharazi reaffirmed Iran’s firm commitment to the goals of the CWC and assured the Director-General of Iran’s unwavering resolve to support the universality of the CWC, particularly in the region of the Middle East. He also underscored the significance of the full, effective and non-discriminatory implementation of all provisions of the CWC by all States Parties.
On behalf of the Organisation, Director-General Pfirter expressed his appreciation for Iran’s continuous support of the goals of the CWC, in particular in the field of civilian protection and the medical care of the victims of chemical weapons. He also thanked the Foreign Minister for Iran’s generous offer to host the Third Regional Meeting of National Authorities of States Parties in Asia, to be held in Tehran in September 2005.
