DECISION

APPOINTMENT OF THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL

The Conference of the States Parties,

Recalling that, in accordance with Article VIII, paragraph 43 of the Convention, the Director-General shall be appointed by the Conference of the States Parties (hereinafter the "Conference") upon the recommendation of the Executive Council (hereinafter the "Council"), for a term of four years; and

Noting the recommendation of the Council at its Nineteenth Meeting to the Conference at this session on the appointment of the Director-General (EC-M-19/DEC.1, dated 16 July 2002);

Hereby:

Appoints Mr Rogelio Pfirter as the Director-General of the Technical Secretariat of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, for a term of office beginning on 25 July 2002, and ending on 24 July 2006; and

Authorises the Chairman of the Conference to conclude a contract with the Director-General accordingly, on the terms and conditions set out in a separate decision of this session.
