DECISION UNDER ITEM FOUR OF THE AGENDA OF THE FIRST SPECIAL SESSION OF THE CONFERENCE OF THE STATES PARTIES

Taking into account the agreement reached by Member States at the present special session of the Conference of the States Parties (hereinafter the “Conference”), that the candidate(s) for the post of Director-General should be a person or persons from the countries of the Latin American and Caribbean region, the Conference hereby:

Requests the presentation of candidate(s) for the post of Director-General of the OPCW Technical Secretariat as soon as practicable;

Further requests the Executive Council to meet no later than 31 May 2002 to review the candidatures and to recommend to the special session of the Conference the appointment of the Director-General;

Decides to reconvene the special session of the Conference to appoint the Director‑General following the recommendation of the Executive Council, no later than 10 June 2002; and

Also decides, as an exceptional measure, that contracts of the Deputy Director‑General and D-2 grade members of the staff of the Technical Secretariat which may expire before the newly appointed Director-General assumes his/her duties shall continue in force until the expiry of one month after the newly appointed Director‑General assumes his/her duties.
