NOTE BY THE CHAIRMAN

OF THE CONFERENCE OF THE STATES PARTIES

TIMING OF THE RESUMPTION OF THE FIRST SPECIAL SESSION

OF THE CONFERENCE OF THE STATES PARTIES

1.                  In the previous Note on this subject (C-SS-1/3, dated 3 June 2002), Member States were advised that, at its Eighteenth Meeting, the Executive Council (hereinafter the “Council”) recommended, inter alia, that the Chairman of the Conference of the States Parties (hereinafter the “Conference”) inform the Member States that the Special Session of the Conference will resume at a later date, after an appropriate recommendation on the appointment of the Director-General has been made by the Council.

2.                  At its Twenty-Ninth Session, the Council recommended to the Chairman of the Conference that the Special Session of the Conference should reconvene on 25 July 2002, to appoint the Director-General of the Technical Secretariat (hereinafter the “Secretariat”) of the OPCW (paragraph 19 of EC-29/3, dated 28 June 2002).

3.                  At its Nineteenth Meeting, the Council recommended that Rogelio Pfirter be appointed the Director-General of the Secretariat (EC-M-19/DEC.1, dated
16 July 2002).

4.                  In light of this recommendation, I wish to inform the Member States that the First Special Session of the Conference will resume at 10:00 on 25 July 2002, at the Netherlands Congress Center (NCC), Churchillplein 10, The Hague, the Netherlands.  It is planned that the Conference will complete its outstanding business on that same  day.
