Call for Registration for a Workshop on Article XI of the Chemical Weapons Convention for the Asia Region

The Technical Secretariat (hereinafter “the Secretariat”) wishes to inform the Member States that the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the Government of the People’s Republic of China are jointly organising a workshop on Article XI of the Chemical Weapons Convention (hereinafter “the Convention”) for the Asia region, scheduled to be held in Beijing, China, from 3 to 5 September 2012. The workshop is intended to foster discussion on the OPCW international cooperation activities in the region, with special focus on priority setting and discussion on the elements of the medium-term strategy under Article XI of the Convention.

The event is a follow-up to the workshop on Article XI, which took place in the OPCW Headquarters in November 2010. Given the outcomes of that workshop and a decision taken by the Conference of the States Parties at its Sixteenth Session on the “Components of an Agreed Framework for the Full Implementation of Article XI” (C-16/DEC.10, dated 1 December 2011), the Secretariat is planning to convene a series of such workshops in each region. The first such workshop is being held in Asia, with the aim of enhancing communication among the relevant stakeholders and examining regional needs and priorities under Article XI activities within the mandate of C-16/DEC.10.

Nominations are invited from the National Authorities, relevant governmental institutions, academia, the chemical industry, and chemical-industry associations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and other relevant groups and individuals involved in various aspects related to the peaceful use of chemistry. Experts who participated in relevant International Cooperation Branch (ICB) events will also be invited. The deadline for submission of registration forms is Wednesday, 8 August 2012.
