Director-General Visits Cuba

The OPCW Director-General, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü, visited Havana on 20 and 21 October 2014 where he was received by HE Mr Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, the First Vice President of the Council of State and Council of Ministers. The Director-General also met with HE Ms Elba Rosa Pérez Montoya, Minister of Science, Technology and Environment; with HE Lenin Echevarría Quintana, acting Minister of Industry; and with H.E. Abelardo Moreno, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs. Read the press release

Nobel Peace Prize 2014

The OPCW Director-General, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü, welcomed today’s announcement by the Nobel Committee of the recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2014: 

“I congratulate this year's winners of the Nobel Peace Prize, Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzai. Their personal courage and determination in promoting children’s rights has been exemplary. This much deserved award does honour to a cause that we must all make our own.”

OPCW-UN Joint Mission Draws to a Close

The OPCW-UN Joint Mission on the elimination of Syrian chemical weapons has completed its mandate and its operations drew to a close on 30 September 2014.  The Director-General praised the role played by the Joint Mission. Read the press release

Executive Council Discusses Findings of Fact-Finding Mission

In a meeting held today, the Executive Council discussed the second report of the Fact-Finding Mission issued on 10 September 2014. The report concludes, with a high degree of confidence, that chlorine was used as a weapon systematically and repeatedly in three villages in northern Syria. Read the press release

Education and Outreach Conference Hosted by the OPCW

Dates: 22-23 September 2014

The OPCW hosted an international conference on 22-23 September 2014, entitled Education for Peace: New Pathways for Securing Chemical Disarmament.  The conference brought together some 120 experts from government, science, industry, academia and civil society from more than 40 countries to exchange information on improving education and outreach in disarmament and non-proliferation, and to discuss ways in which to sustain activities and initiatives in this area. 190 States Parties covering
98% of the global population

84.95% of the world's declared stockpile of 72,524 metric tonnes of chemical agent have been destroyed.

5,545 inspections have taken place at 265 chemical weapon-related and 2,024 industrial sites on the territory of 86 States Parties since April 1997.

4,913 industrial facilities are liable to inspection.
