OPCW: The 2013 Nobel Peace Laureate

Deadline: 15 September 2014

On 11 October 2013, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award of the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for its extensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons. In its press release following the announcement of the award, the Committee stated that “[b]y means of the present award to the OPCW, the Committee is seeking to contribute to the elimination of chemical weapons”.

In his Nobel Peace Prize Lecture, the Director-General of the OPCW, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü, noted that “[t]his award recognises our combined efforts. Efforts which flow from the collective spirit of the OPCW in working towards a common good that serves all humanity.”

The Nobel Peace Prize to the OPCW consisted of a medal, a diploma, and a cash prize of approximately EUR 900,000. The Director-General, in consultation with States Parties and other stakeholders, decided that in order to create a lasting legacy of the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize award to the OPCW, the Organisation, in partnership with the City of The Hague, has established an annual “OPCW–The Hague Award”.
